The month of June is all about the brain. This year we've taken our yoga deep into the body. The superficial is so 2019. We practice to feel good on the day, but also to acquire a deep understanding of the body.
This month you're going to learn to how to move your eyes to change the way your brain functions, neuroplasticity, cross lateralisation and (if that wasn't enough) debunk some of the myths;
“The human brain starts working the moment you’re born, and never stops until you stand up to speak in public.”
-Ok that one might be true. But here are some that we definitely need to correct.
“I can’t turn off my brain”
Your brain is so much more complex and beautiful than a device that can be turned on and off again. I think what we mean by that phrase is we’re finding it hard to access the brainwaves that promote rest and rejuvenation. That’s fair enough. The brain is a muscle as we know, and if you train it to be scattered, distractible, agitated and then resent it for your careful training when you can’t sleep at night… -you see where I’m going with this right? Train it to be all of those things for sure, but also train it to be a sanctuary, your happy place, a companion into sleep.
“You only use 10% of your brain”
I should hope so too! Have you ever met a child or any other baby creature? They use so much of their brain power to understand the world around them, they need a lot more sleep than a mature animal. The brain demands a lot of energy, so it’s not that we only use about 10% of the potential, it’s that our brain becomes more efficient as we age. (Here’s a fun experiment; move all of your apps around on your phone, change a few of your closest friends to different names, and after a week, email me to tell me how tiring using your phone is).
I’m fairly confident we’ve got the processing and admin side of brain function sorted, so how about this month I teach you ways to rewire a few bits using your imagination? Instead of fighting with your mind; make friends and celebrate its incredible capacity!
I honestly can’t think of a better use of your time. After one month, the techniques are all yours for the rest of this lifetime (your brain will remember them of course, it's clever like that).
